Customer Stories - The Art of Philippe Parreno
At the Hessel Museum of Art, part of The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, in Annandale-On-Hudson, NY, there is a most interesting show of work by Philippe Parreno.
Mr. Parreno, a French post-Conceptualist, has, since the late 1980s been a mover and shaker in the artistic development known as relational aesthetics. In this realm, artist-orchestrated social exchanges, situations and communal experiences are generally preferred to literal art objects, which are seen at best as optional - props whose formal qualities are almost beside the point - and at worst terminally corrupt in their role as art-market commodities.
In this work at Bard College, art objects are kept to a minimum and spectacle prevails. The presentation consists mainly of wide-open, red-carpeted spaces - nearly 10,000 square feet - punctuated by two immense video screens, each playing, in alternation, one short video.
"Philippe Parreno" at CCS Bard is part of a series of retrospectives taking place from 2009 to 2010 at Kunsthalle Zurich, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and the Serpentine Gallery in London. "Philippe Parreno" at CCS Bard is curated by Maria Lind.
Where HAVE comes in...
The "Philippe Parreno" exhibition, includes two immense video screens, each alternately playing Mr. Parreno's film work. HAVE was called upon by Bard College to work with the HD source video files of Mr. Parreno's film, converting them to a Standard Definition format that would best work with the exhibition displays, without loss of quality or detail on such large screens.
